The Upper Castle ruins provide a more archaeological castle experience than the restored strongholds at Vaduz and Balzers. Stone walls, gateways and the outline of defensive spaces remain open to the sky, allowing the medieval plan to be read directly in the landscape. The wooded ridge and short approach paths add a walking element, while the location connects naturally with nearby villages and the lower castle ruins. It is an effective final stop on a circuit of the Unterland.

History
The castle was established around the medieval period when the Schellenberg lords controlled the ridge and surrounding territory. It later lost its residential and defensive role, leaving substantial ruins that have been conserved as an important archaeological monument.
