Gutenberg Castle has one of Liechtenstein’s strongest settings: a distinct rocky hill rises from the otherwise broad valley floor, making the fortress visible from far across Balzers. The climb around the hill gives views towards Switzerland, the Rhine and surrounding mountains, while the castle walls and chapel evoke the medieval strategic importance of this southern approach. Parts of the complex are used for events, so the most reliable experience is the exterior, hill and surrounding paths.

History
Archaeological evidence shows much older occupation of the hill, while the present castle developed in the Middle Ages. It passed through several noble and private owners before restoration in the modern era. The State of Liechtenstein later acquired the property and uses parts of it for cultural purposes.
