Why visit

Vaduz Castle is the country’s clearest visual link between the modern principality and its dynastic history. The fortified complex rises directly above the capital, and the approach gives changing views over Vaduz, the Rhine plain and the Swiss mountains beyond. The residence itself is private, so the value of the stop lies in the exterior, the wooded hillside setting and the way the castle dominates the small capital from almost every central street.

History

A castle is documented here in the Middle Ages, with the site first mentioned in the early fourteenth century. The Liechtenstein family acquired the property in the eighteenth century. After later restoration and enlargement, it became the principal residence of the reigning family in the twentieth century.
