River mouth on Crete's south coast where a palm-lined gorge meets a beach beneath rugged cliffs. The Kourtaliotis river supports a natural grove of Cretan date palms before reaching the Libyan Sea. Fire damaged the palm forest in 2010, but the ecosystem showed strong regeneration and remains a protected natural landscape. The visit is strongest when you focus on palm-lined river, beach and freshwater pools and gorge approach views.
