Travelling in Greece

How the days actually work here — seasons, transport, pace and what to do when the weather turns.

Getting around Greece

  • Athens, Thessaloniki and several major mainland corridors work well without a car, but regional buses and rail do not reach every visitor site.
  • A car becomes more useful for multi-site Peloponnese days, mountain regions, remote beaches and some archaeological areas.
  • Check the current final connection before building a rural day around a local bus, taxi, ferry or boat service.

Athens planning

  • Central Athens is best explored in walkable clusters, with metro and tram links useful for longer jumps across the city and coast.
  • Heat can make exposed archaeological sites tiring in summer, so place long outdoor visits earlier or later in the day where opening arrangements allow.
  • Piraeus ferry departures need extra transfer time because the port is large and departure gates vary by route.

Mainland journeys

  • Intercity coaches are important where rail is limited, especially for regional towns and many Peloponnese journeys.
  • Mountain and village roads can be slower and more demanding than map distance suggests; allow a comfortable day rather than stacking distant stops.
  • Delphi, Meteora, Olympia and major northern cities fit well into longer mainland routes when overnight bases are chosen close to the next day's sights.

Ferries and island travel

  • Ferry routes and frequencies change by season, and not every neighbouring island has a direct connection every day.
  • Keep important flight or international ferry connections away from a tight same-day island transfer when weather disruption would create a serious problem.
  • For small islands and remote beaches, local buses, taxis, rental vehicles or boat excursions may be more practical than relying on a single transport mode.

Driving

  • Main highways are straightforward, but old towns, islands and mountain villages can have narrow streets, limited parking and traffic restrictions.
  • Use a suitable parking or arrival point rather than assuming a landmark entrance is reachable by car.
  • Fuel and charging availability is strongest around larger settlements; plan ahead before remote mountain or island days.

Mountains, gorges and nature

  • Use marked trails and obey wildfire, conservation, weather and seasonal closure notices.
  • Samaria Gorge, Vikos Gorge, Mount Olympus and other demanding walks need appropriate footwear, water and a plan that matches the group's fitness.
  • High temperatures, strong wind and sudden mountain weather can change a safe day plan, so keep a lower-effort alternative.

Archaeological and sacred sites

  • Large archaeological sites are often exposed and uneven, so allow more time than a museum visit and carry sun protection in warm months.
  • Monasteries and active religious communities may require modest dress and have access rules that differ from ordinary attractions.
  • Mount Athos has controlled entry and is not a normal sightseeing stop; visitors must follow the current permit and access rules.

Accessibility and final access

  • Historic citadels, monasteries, caves, gorges and old towns often contain stairs, cobbles, steep gradients or rough surfaces.
  • Where step-free access is essential, check the exact entrance, lift status and accessible route directly before travelling.
  • A shorter harbour, museum, promenade or viewpoint visit can be a better alternative when the full archaeological or hiking route is unsuitable.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October for broad touring; summer is especially popular for islands and beaches but brings stronger heat and peak demand.

July and August can be very hot and busy at major archaeological sites and islands. Ferry schedules, gorge access, mountain conditions and seasonal attraction hours should always be checked for the exact travel date.
