Major ancient sanctuary of Hera on Samos, preserving the remains of one of the largest Ionic temples ever attempted. The sanctuary grew from early cult activity into a monumental centre during the Archaic period, when Samos was a major maritime power. Successive colossal temples were built, and votive offerings arrived from across the eastern Mediterranean.
