Dense historic town shaped by Venetian fortifications, arcaded streets, British-era buildings and Ionian cultural life. Corfu's strategic position kept it under Venetian rule for centuries while much of Greece was Ottoman. French and British administrations followed before union with Greece in 1864, leaving a layered urban landscape inside formidable fortifications. The visit is strongest when you focus on old fortress, liston and spianada and campiello lanes.
