Kulturen makes everyday architecture the main subject rather than treating historic buildings as background. Houses and interiors from different periods and social settings allow construction, furnishing and domestic routines to be compared at close range. Museum galleries add archaeology, craft and cultural-history material, while the gardens help connect buildings to their original use. The location in central Lund means the site can be read alongside the cathedral and university quarter, giving a fuller picture of the city beyond monumental institutions. History
Kulturen was founded in the late 19th century by Georg Karlin and developed as one of Sweden’s early open-air museums. Historic buildings were moved or preserved within the Lund site alongside growing cultural-history collections.
