Serravalle provides an important regional counterweight to the capital. Its historic core recalls the period when the northern frontier of present-day San Marino was contested by neighbouring powers, and the surviving urban fabric retains the character of a small fortified settlement. The visit is less monumental than Mount Titano but helps explain how the republic reached its modern territorial shape. It pairs naturally with the nearby stadium and with a drive through the northern castello towards Dogana and the Italian border.

History
Serravalle was historically associated with the Malatesta lords of Rimini. During the conflict that ended Malatesta power in the area, San Marino gained Serravalle in 1463, along with other territories that established much of the republic’s present boundaries. The old centre developed around the former fortified site.
