Stade Louis II is an unusual stadium because it is integrated into the compact reclaimed district of Fontvieille rather than standing in a large open sports park. The arches, surrounding buildings and close relationship with the neighbourhood make the architecture as interesting as the sporting role. It is home to AS Monaco and also hosts athletics and other events, although routine interior access depends on the programme. Even from the surrounding streets, the complex helps explain how Monaco fits major civic facilities into a very limited land area.

History
The current Stade Louis II was inaugurated in 1985, replacing an earlier stadium that had stood elsewhere in Monaco. Built in Fontvieille during the major expansion of the reclaimed district, the complex combined a football and athletics stadium with other sports facilities. It became the home ground of AS Monaco and a prominent venue in the principality’s sporting life.
