Saint Martin Gardens provide a scenic pedestrian link across the seaward edge of Monaco-Ville rather than a separate attraction requiring a detour. Mature Mediterranean planting, sculptures and shaded paths frame views over the coast, while the gardens soften the dense stone setting of the Rock. They work particularly well between the cathedral and Oceanographic Museum, giving a slower outdoor interval between major interiors. The elevated position also helps explain Monaco’s relationship with the sea and the steep topography that shapes movement around the principality.

History
The gardens were laid out in the early nineteenth century on the cliffs of Monaco-Ville, during a period when public planting was being expanded around the Rock. Over time they developed into a landscaped promenade with Mediterranean and exotic species, sculpture and viewpoints. Their setting beside the Oceanographic Museum later tied them closely to the cultural landscape of the seaward side of Monaco-Ville.
