Why visit

The Oceanographic Museum combines marine science, historic expedition material and aquarium displays in a monumental building above the Mediterranean. It provides more depth than a conventional aquarium because the collections are linked to Monaco’s scientific history and to Prince Albert I’s oceanographic work. The building itself is part of the visit, with dramatic cliff-side architecture and sea views from upper levels. Its mix of natural history, living marine displays and exhibitions also makes it one of Monaco’s strongest options for families or for a day when outdoor conditions are poor.

History

Prince Albert I, an active oceanographic researcher and expedition leader, founded the museum as part of his scientific institutions. The monumental building opened in 1910 on the seaward edge of the Rock. Over the following century it developed major marine collections, aquariums and public education work while continuing the principality’s association with ocean research and conservation.
