Why visit

Dwejra provides a focused way to understand Gozo’s limestone geology through a concentrated group of coastal formations. The inland sea, steep cliffs, rocky shoreline and offshore stacks form an unusually varied landscape within a small area, illustrating erosion and collapse processes along the island’s exposed western edge. Its value lies in the combination of surviving fabric, setting and interpretation, which places the site within the wider history of Malta and the central Mediterranean. Allowing time to examine the details rather than treating it as a brief photo stop gives context that is difficult to gain from the exterior or landscape alone.

History

Dwejra is a natural coastal landscape shaped by erosion of Gozo’s limestone. The area was long known for the Azure Window, a natural arch that collapsed during a storm in 2017; the surrounding geological features remain the principal focus of the site.
