Bourscheid Castle feels closely tied to the terrain that made it defensible. Walls and towers occupy a triangular spur above the Sûre, with wooded slopes dropping away on several sides. The large enclosure preserves evidence of repeated medieval expansion, making it possible to distinguish an older core from later outer works. Compared with Vianden, the site has a more ruinous and military character, so the two castles complement rather than duplicate each other. The surrounding viewpoints also make Bourscheid a useful stop on a northern route through the Ardennes landscape.

History
A fortified site existed here by around the year 1000, and the castle was enlarged repeatedly during the Middle Ages. Successive building phases added towers, outer walls and residential structures as the local lordship developed. After later decline, restoration and conservation protected the surviving complex as one of Luxembourg’s largest medieval castle sites.
