Vianden Castle

Why visit

Vianden Castle combines imposing architecture with a strong sense of landscape. The Romanesque and Gothic core rises above the small town and the Our valley, making the approach and exterior views as important as the rooms inside. Restored halls, chapels and defensive structures show how an aristocratic residence evolved over several centuries rather than presenting a single architectural moment. The site is also a useful northern base because the castle can be combined with the town, river and surrounding hills without reducing the visit to a quick stop between Luxembourg City and the Ardennes.

History

The castle developed mainly between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries on older fortified foundations. It was associated with the Counts of Vianden and later passed through other dynastic ownership. After decline and partial dismantling, the Luxembourg state acquired the castle in 1977, enabling a long programme of restoration and reconstruction based on surviving fabric and research.
