Užupis is worth time for its the contrast between historic urban fabric and a self-conscious artistic community. The visit combines riverside lanes, courtyards, public art and the symbolic Užupis constitution, making the site useful for understanding the reuse and reinterpretation of an older Vilnius neighbourhood. History
Užupis developed as a suburb beyond the old city core and passed through periods of neglect and renewal. From the late twentieth century, artists and residents helped shape the district’s playful “republic” identity while retaining much of its older street pattern.
