Why visit

Paide’s castle hill provides a concise introduction to the strategic centre of Järva County. Earthworks and surviving masonry show the footprint of the medieval stronghold, while the reconstructed Vallitorn gives the site a clear vertical landmark and houses historical interpretation. The hill is closely integrated with the modern town, so the visit can extend into Paide’s civic centre without extra travel. Its position in central Estonia also makes it a practical stop between Tallinn, Viljandi and Tartu routes.

History

The Livonian Order began building a stone castle at Paide in the thirteenth century, with a prominent central tower at its core. Warfare later destroyed much of the fortress. The main tower was reconstructed in the twentieth century.
