Why visit

Lake Pühajärv is a good base for experiencing the softer glacial landscape around Otepää. Its irregular shoreline, islands and wooded slopes create changing views from paths and recreation areas around the water. A longer trail circles much of the lake, while shorter stops can focus on the northern shore or selected viewpoints. The lake is particularly useful in a southern Estonia itinerary because it contrasts with bogs and coastal wetlands: here the landscape is hillier, more enclosed and shaped by a mosaic of forest and water.

History

The lake is a natural feature of the Otepää Upland, a landscape shaped strongly by the last glaciation. It has long been used for recreation and is now part of the wider protected and recreational landscape around Otepää.
