Why visit

Ontika reveals the large-scale landform behind several individual attractions on the Ida-Viru coast. The cliff line rises sharply above the Baltic, exposing layers that record hundreds of millions of years of geological history. Forest, coastal viewpoints and the nearby Valaste waterfall can be combined into one visit, but natural edges and steep slopes require care. The area is particularly useful for travellers interested in geology because it shows that Valaste is part of a much longer escarpment rather than an isolated waterfall feature.

History

The Ontika cliff forms part of the Baltic Klint, a long limestone escarpment running through northern Estonia and beyond. Erosion has exposed Ordovician and older sedimentary layers along this section of coast.
