Why visit

The promenade expresses Haapsalu’s nineteenth- and early twentieth-century identity as a seaside health resort. Wooden architecture, the historic Kuursaal and quiet views over the bay create a very different atmosphere from the nearby medieval castle. Walking the shoreline helps explain why the town attracted spa visitors and artists, while benches and small pavilions encourage a slower pace. The promenade is especially useful as a transition between the castle, old streets and Haapsalu’s wider coastal setting.

History

Haapsalu developed as a fashionable spa resort in the nineteenth century. The waterfront was gradually landscaped with promenades and recreational buildings, several of which survive as part of the town’s resort heritage.
