Why visit

Haapsalu Castle makes the medieval history of western Estonia easy to read because the defensive enclosure and cathedral remain closely tied to the town around them. Walks along the walls and courtyards reveal how the fortress developed, while museum interpretation adds the story of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek and later periods. The castle is large enough to reward a careful visit but sits directly beside Haapsalu’s old streets, so it can be combined naturally with the promenade and wooden resort architecture.

History

The castle developed from the thirteenth century as a principal centre of the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek. It was expanded and altered over the following centuries before losing its military role and becoming a major historic monument.
