Why visit

Kõpu Lighthouse combines maritime history with one of Hiiumaa’s best elevated viewpoints. The thick stone tower looks unlike later slender lighthouses, reflecting its much earlier origins and the practical demands of keeping a beacon visible across the Baltic. The surrounding pine forest and remote western peninsula reinforce the sense of place. When interior access is available, climbing the tower adds a wide view over Hiiumaa; otherwise the exterior and setting still make the site an important marker of the island’s long relationship with shipping.

History

Construction of a permanent navigation tower began in the early sixteenth century, and a beacon was operating by the 1530s. The structure was altered and strengthened repeatedly as lighting technology and maritime requirements changed.
