Jägala is one of the easiest places near Tallinn to see the geological character of northern Estonia in a dramatic form. The river drops over a wide limestone ledge, exposing the layered rock and creating very different scenes as water levels and freezing conditions change. Paths around the falls offer more than one perspective, although surfaces can be wet or icy. The site works well on a route towards Lahemaa because it introduces the limestone landscape that reappears along the northern coast.

History
The waterfall is a natural feature of the Jägala River where the water crosses the North Estonian limestone escarpment. Its form has shifted gradually through erosion of the rock edge over time.
