Why visit

The museum gives physical context to rural life that is difficult to gain from objects in indoor galleries. Farm complexes from different parts of Estonia show how building materials, layouts and household economies varied by region and period. Paths between the buildings create a landscape-scale visit, while demonstrations and interiors, when operating, add craft and domestic detail. It is a useful early stop in a longer Estonia trip because many later villages, manor estates and island landscapes become easier to read after seeing these traditional building types.

History

The Estonian Open Air Museum was established in 1957 and opened to visitors in the 1960s. Its collection expanded through the relocation and reconstruction of historic rural buildings from different Estonian regions.
