Kantara rewards the journey because its purpose becomes immediately understandable from the summit landscape. The ruins are less elaborate than Bellapais or the major city castles, but their position gives broad views over the Karpas approach, coast and Mesaoria. The combination of exposed masonry and mountain terrain makes it a strong eastern counterpart to Saint Hilarion. The stop works especially well when placed beside nearby sites from the same region, because the contrast in landscape, architecture or historical period makes the wider character of Cyprus easier to understand.

History
Kantara formed part of the network of Byzantine and medieval mountain castles in northern Cyprus and was later used and modified under Lusignan rule. Its strategic value came from commanding routes across the eastern range.
