The castle provides a compact chronological bridge between the Crusader-era history of Cyprus and the later Ottoman city. History
The present castle reflects Ottoman rebuilding over earlier medieval structures. The site is traditionally associated with events during Richard I’s conquest of Cyprus in 1191, though the surviving fabric is substantially later.
