The Olympus area changes the scale of a Cyprus itinerary from coast and archaeological plains to high mountain terrain. Pine forest, exposed rock and cooler conditions demonstrate the island’s sharp variation in elevation. The interest is in the wider summit landscape and geology rather than reaching a single marker at any cost. The stop works especially well when placed beside nearby sites from the same region, because the contrast in landscape, architecture or historical period makes the wider character of Cyprus easier to understand.

History
Mount Olympus is the highest point on Cyprus and forms part of the Troodos ophiolite landscape, rocks associated with ancient oceanic crust. Modern installations occupy parts of the summit area, so access to the exact highest point may be restricted.
