The small fortress anchors the harbour visually and condenses several periods of Paphos history into a single structure. Its heavy masonry and waterside position explain the strategic importance of the port, while the surrounding promenade makes it easy to combine with the archaeological park and old harbour. The stop works especially well when placed beside nearby sites from the same region, because the contrast in landscape, architecture or historical period makes the wider character of Cyprus easier to understand.

History
The harbour fortification has Byzantine roots but was repeatedly altered after earthquakes and changes of rule. The surviving building largely reflects Ottoman reconstruction after the Venetian period.
