These tombs show how elite burial architecture in ancient Cyprus borrowed the language of houses and classical monuments. Descending into the rock-cut courts reveals columns, chambers and passages that are difficult to appreciate from photographs alone, while the exposed coastal setting gives the cemetery a strong sense of place. The stop works especially well when placed beside nearby sites from the same region, because the contrast in landscape, architecture or historical period makes the wider character of Cyprus easier to understand.

History
The necropolis was used from the Hellenistic period into Roman times. Its monumental underground chambers were cut for high-status burials; the name is traditional and does not mean that kings were interred here.
