Zheravna offers one of the most coherent examples of a National Revival village in eastern Bulgaria. Its dark timber houses and enclosed courtyards differ noticeably from the whitewashed architecture of the Rhodopes, showing regional variation within the same broad period. The village is best experienced through its street pattern as well as individual house museums. Its position near the southeastern approaches to the Balkan Mountains also makes it a natural final link between Strandzha and central Bulgarian heritage.

History
Zheravna flourished as a craft and trading community during the Ottoman period, with many substantial houses built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Conservation has protected the village’s traditional street pattern and domestic architecture.
