Why visit

The museum gives historical structure to Sozopol’s attractive old-town setting. Greek pottery and other archaeological finds explain the city’s beginnings as Apollonia Pontica, while later material shows that the peninsula remained important through many political changes. Visiting the museum before walking the historic streets helps distinguish what belongs to the ancient colony, medieval town and later Black Sea settlement. It also provides a useful southern counterpart to Varna’s much broader regional collections.

History

Sozopol developed from the Greek colony of Apollonia Pontica and remained an important Black Sea settlement through Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Ottoman periods. Local excavations have produced ceramics, sculpture, funerary finds and maritime evidence.
