The Kazanlak tomb is one of the strongest places for understanding Thracian visual culture because painting survives as a central part of the monument rather than only portable objects in a museum. The replica allows the composition of the chamber and its narrative scenes to be studied closely while protecting the original. The site also provides essential context for the concentration of Thracian mounds and archaeological discoveries across the wider Kazanlak valley.

History

The tomb dates to the late 4th or early 3rd century BC and belongs to the Thracian cultural landscape of the Valley of the Kings. To protect the original paintings, visitors normally experience a purpose-built replica nearby.
