Why visit

Vihren gives the Pirin range a distinct character from the rounded highlands and lake basins of Rila. The exposed limestone summit and steep approaches reveal a more austere mountain landscape, with alpine flora and broad views forming the main interest. The peak also helps place Bansko and nearby villages within a protected mountain environment rather than only a resort setting. Seasonal conditions can make the route significantly more demanding than its map distance suggests.

History

Vihren is one of Bulgaria’s highest summits and lies within Pirin National Park, a protected mountain landscape whose natural values are recognised by UNESCO. The area has a long tradition of hiking and mountaineering.
