Mostar’s celebrated stone bridge, spanning the Neretva between historic quarters and forming the centrepiece of the UNESCO-listed old city. The sixteenth-century Ottoman bridge was destroyed in 1993 and reconstructed using traditional methods, reopening in 2004 as a symbol of restoration and reconciliation.

History

The sixteenth-century Ottoman bridge was destroyed in 1993 and reconstructed using traditional methods, reopening in 2004 as a symbol of restoration and reconciliation. The place should be understood within Bosnia and Herzegovina’s layered history, where medieval states, Ottoman administration, Austro-Hungarian rule, Yugoslav development and the 1992–1995 war left different traces.
