A richly decorated neo-Moorish city hall beside the Miljacka River, restored after wartime destruction. Completed in the Austro-Hungarian period, Vijećnica later housed the national library and was devastated by fire in 1992 before a long reconstruction.

Completed in the Austro-Hungarian period, Vijećnica later housed the national library and was devastated by fire in 1992 before a long reconstruction. The place should be understood within Bosnia and Herzegovina’s layered history, where medieval states, Ottoman administration, Austro-Hungarian rule, Yugoslav development and the 1992–1995 war left different traces.
