Why visit

Sant Joan de Caselles is one of the clearest places to examine Andorran Romanesque architecture as a complete ensemble. The stone nave, apse and tall bell tower are strongly legible from outside, while the interior heritage includes a notable stucco image of Christ and later devotional furnishings. The roadside valley setting also shows how sacred buildings related to historic movement through Canillo parish. Its combination of architecture, sculpture and painting provides a useful reference point for comparing smaller rural chapels elsewhere in the country.

History

The church is generally dated to the 11th–12th centuries. Its Romanesque structure includes a Lombard-style bell tower, while the interior preserves significant medieval stucco decoration and later altarpiece work.
