Gutenberg Castle
Gutenberg Castle has one of Liechtenstein’s strongest settings: a distinct rocky hill rises from the otherwise broad valley floor, making the fortress visible from far across Balzers. St Mamerten Chapel
St Mamerten is valuable for its quiet setting and the sense of continuity between landscape, settlement and religious history. The compact chapel stands apart from Triesen’s denser modern streets, surrounded by grass, cemetery walls and views across the valley. Its scale encourages close attention to old masonry and the shape of the site rather than monumental architecture. Combined with nearby village walks, it shows an older layer of Triesen that can be easy to miss from the main road through the municipality.

Vaduz Castle
Vaduz Castle is the country’s clearest visual link between the modern principality and its dynastic history. The fortified complex rises directly above the capital, and the approach gives changing views over Vaduz, the Rhine plain and the Swiss mountains beyond. The residence itself is private, so the value of the stop lies in the exterior, the wooded hillside setting and the way the castle dominates the small capital from almost every central street.

Upper Castle Ruins, Schellenberg
The Upper Castle ruins provide a more archaeological castle experience than the restored strongholds at Vaduz and Balzers. Stone walls, gateways and the outline of defensive spaces remain open to the sky, allowing the medieval plan to be read directly in the landscape. The wooded ridge and short approach paths add a walking element, while the location connects naturally with nearby villages and the lower castle ruins. It is an effective final stop on a circuit of the Unterland.
