    Ruggeller Riet Nature Reserve

    Ruggeller Riet reveals a side of Liechtenstein very different from the steep mountain imagery usually associated with the country. Flat wet meadows, drainage channels, reed beds and open views create a quiet landscape close to the Rhine and Austrian border. Seasonal plants and birdlife give the reserve particular interest, but its wider value lies in showing the rare surviving wetland habitats of the valley floor. Castle ridge and church hill

    Upper Castle Ruins, Schellenberg

    The Upper Castle ruins provide a more archaeological castle experience than the restored strongholds at Vaduz and Balzers. Stone walls, gateways and the outline of defensive spaces remain open to the sky, allowing the medieval plan to be read directly in the landscape. The wooded ridge and short approach paths add a walking element, while the location connects naturally with nearby villages and the lower castle ruins. It is an effective final stop on a circuit of the Unterland.

    Parish Church of St Mary, Bendern

    Bendern’s church hill is one of the Unterland’s most coherent historic settings. The parish church, cemetery and neighbouring old buildings occupy a small rise above the valley, with views towards the Rhine and surrounding mountains. The site carries both religious and civic significance and rewards a slow walk around the hill rather than only an interior visit. Its position also helps explain why Bendern developed as an important local centre despite its small scale today.
