    Heraklion Archaeological Museum

    Essential museum for Minoan Crete, displaying major finds from Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and other island sites. The museum developed from collections assembled during the great excavations of Crete in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its purpose-built twentieth-century building houses one of the world's most important collections of Minoan art and material culture. Phaistos and Gortyna

    Palace of Phaistos

    Minoan palatial site overlooking the Messara Plain, with monumental courts, stairways and storerooms. Phaistos became a major Minoan centre in the second millennium BCE. An early palace was destroyed and rebuilt, and excavations exposed a complex organised around a large central court; the famous Phaistos Disc was found in the wider palace area.     Ancient Gortyna

    Ancient city in the Messara Plain, best known for the Gortyn Law Code and major Roman and early Christian remains. Gortyna rose to particular importance under Roman rule and became the capital of Crete and Cyrenaica. Earlier inscriptions preserve a celebrated fifth-century BCE law code, while the Roman city included monumental public buildings and later Christian basilicas. The visit is strongest when you focus on gortyn law code, odeon and basilica of st titus.

Fortezza and Arkadi

    Fortezza of Rethymno

    Large Venetian fortress above Rethymno, enclosing bastions, former civic buildings and Ottoman-period additions. The Venetians built the Fortezza in the late sixteenth century after an Ottoman raid exposed the town's vulnerability. After Ottoman conquest in 1646, buildings within the fortress were adapted, including the former cathedral as a mosque.     Arkadi Monastery

    Historic Orthodox monastery near Rethymno, central to Cretan memory of resistance against Ottoman rule. The monastery's present Renaissance-influenced church dates from the Venetian period. In 1866, during a Cretan uprising, besieged defenders and civilians died when the powder store exploded, making Arkadi a powerful symbol of resistance.     Preveli Palm Forest and Beach

    River mouth on Crete's south coast where a palm-lined gorge meets a beach beneath rugged cliffs. The Kourtaliotis river supports a natural grove of Cretan date palms before reaching the Libyan Sea. Fire damaged the palm forest in 2010, but the ecosystem showed strong regeneration and remains a protected natural landscape. Venetian Harbour

    Historic harbour city where Venetian, Ottoman and Greek layers meet around lanes, arsenals, fortifications and the waterfront. Chania occupies the site of ancient Kydonia and became an important Venetian port from the thirteenth century. Ottoman conquest in 1645 introduced mosques and baths, while later Egyptian and Greek phases added further layers to the harbour city.     Long mountain gorge in western Crete, crossed by a demanding seasonal trail from Omalos toward the Libyan Sea. The gorge has long provided a remote refuge and route through the White Mountains. It became a national park in 1962, protecting Cretan ecosystems and the kri-kri wild goat while formalising one of Greece's best-known long-distance hikes.     Remote lagoon in northwest Crete with shallow turquoise water, pale sand and dramatic Gramvousa peninsula scenery. Balos is a natural coastal lagoon shaped by sediment, currents and the exposed geology of the Gramvousa peninsula. It remained relatively isolated until road and excursion-boat access brought large seasonal visitor numbers. Spinalonga

    Spinalonga

    Small fortified island off eastern Crete, known for Venetian defences and its twentieth-century history as a leprosy settlement. Venice fortified Spinalonga in the sixteenth century to control Mirabello Bay. The island remained Venetian after much of Crete fell to the Ottomans and later, from 1903 to 1957, housed people with leprosy from Crete and elsewhere in Greece.
