Orthodox monasteries perched on towering sandstone pillars above Kalambaka and Kastraki. Hermits occupied caves in the rock formations by the medieval period, and organised monasteries developed especially from the fourteenth century. Twenty-four monasteries existed at the height of the community; six remain active and open at varying times. The visit is strongest when you focus on great meteoron, varlaam monastery and rock-pillar viewpoints.

Theopetra Prehistory

Theopetra Cave
Prehistoric cave near Meteora with evidence spanning from the Middle Palaeolithic into the Neolithic period. Excavations revealed exceptionally long human use, including hearths, tools, burials and environmental evidence. A stone wall near the entrance has been interpreted as an Ice Age construction, while a nearby interpretation centre presents the findings. The visit is strongest when you focus on prehistoric occupation layers, reconstructed finds and interpretation and meteora-area setting.

Lake Plastira
Large mountain reservoir surrounded by forested Agrafa slopes, villages and outdoor recreation areas. The lake was created in the twentieth century following the construction of the Tavropos dam, an idea associated with politician and general Nikolaos Plastiras. It transformed the local landscape while becoming a major recreation and water-resource area. The visit is strongest when you focus on lakeside viewpoints, agrafa mountain scenery and walking and paddling areas.

Traditional Pelion village climbing a steep slope above Volos, with stone mansions and broad Pagasetic Gulf views. Makrinitsa prospered under Ottoman rule as a craft and trading settlement, developing the stone houses, churches, fountains and paved lanes typical of Pelion. Its elevated position made it an important regional village and later a celebrated visitor base. Tiny stone-and-sea village on eastern Pelion with a sheltered harbour, old lanes and a pebbled cove. Damouchari grew around a protected natural harbour used by local sailors and traders on Pelion's Aegean coast. Traditional stone buildings and the compact waterfront preserve the character of a small maritime settlement.
