Suur Munamägi
Suur Munamägi is modest by mountain standards but important for understanding the rolling relief of south-eastern Estonia. The site works best as part of a wider southern route rather than a standalone mountain challenge. Taevaskoja Sandstone Outcrops
Taevaskoja combines geology and a gentle forest walk in one of southern Estonia’s most recognisable river valleys. The orange and pale sandstone walls rise directly from bends of the Ahja, with springs, forest and water creating a layered landscape rather than a single viewpoint. Routes link the larger and smaller outcrops, so time can be adjusted to weather and walking ability. The site adds a very different geological character to an Estonia itinerary after the northern limestone cliffs and western coastal rock.

Piusa Caves
Piusa is a distinctive combination of industrial history and natural conservation. The caves were created by mining rather than by natural dissolution, leaving galleries and pillars in soft sandstone. After extraction ended, the underground spaces became significant hibernation sites for bats, so access is carefully managed and much of the system is not freely entered. A visitor centre and permitted viewing areas explain both the mining process and the protected ecology. The surrounding pine landscape adds a useful outdoor element to a south-eastern Estonia route.

Historicist manor

Sangaste Castle
Sangaste stands out among Estonian manors because its historicist design is deliberately castle-like. Red brick, towers, varied rooflines and large windows reflect nineteenth-century fascination with British country-house architecture rather than the Baroque classicism seen at Palmse or Suuremõisa. Interior access, when available, adds rooms connected with the estate’s owners and agricultural history. Lake Pühajärv
Lake Pühajärv is a good base for experiencing the softer glacial landscape around Otepää. Its irregular shoreline, islands and wooded slopes create changing views from paths and recreation areas around the water. A longer trail circles much of the lake, while shorter stops can focus on the northern shore or selected viewpoints. The lake is particularly useful in a southern Estonia itinerary because it contrasts with bogs and coastal wetlands: here the landscape is hillier, more enclosed and shaped by a mosaic of forest and water.
