    Suuremõisa is one of the clearest places on Hiiumaa to understand the estate system that shaped rural Baltic society. Current institutional uses mean that access to individual interiors can vary, but the ensemble is worth walking from outside. The manor pairs well with Hiiumaa’s lighthouses by adding social and architectural history to an otherwise coast-focused route.

    Tahkuna Lighthouse

    Tahkuna Lighthouse offers a useful contrast with the much older stone tower at Kõpu. Its slender prefabricated iron structure belongs to a later era of lighthouse engineering, and the surrounding coast opens towards the northern Baltic. The site can be combined with nearby memorials and forest roads for a broader peninsula visit. When access to the tower is available, the view reveals Hiiumaa’s low, wooded landscape; at ground level the relationship between the lighthouse, shore and navigation route is already clear.

    Kõpu Lighthouse

    Kõpu Lighthouse combines maritime history with one of Hiiumaa’s best elevated viewpoints. The thick stone tower looks unlike later slender lighthouses, reflecting its much earlier origins and the practical demands of keeping a beacon visible across the Baltic. The surrounding pine forest and remote western peninsula reinforce the sense of place. When interior access is available, climbing the tower adds a wide view over Hiiumaa; otherwise the exterior and setting still make the site an important marker of the island’s long relationship with shipping.
