Explore Ukraine

Historic cities, monasteries, castles, steppe, Carpathian landscapes and Black Sea heritage across Ukraine, presented with explicit wartime access warnings.

Ukraine’s cultural and natural heritage extends from Lviv and the Carpathians to Kyiv, the Dnipro, the Black Sea, Donbas and Crimea. The ongoing war means many entries are for cultural reference and future planning rather than present-day leisure travel, and occupied or frontline places are not presented as currently visitable.

Travelling in Ukraine

How the days actually work here — seasons, transport, pace and what to do when the weather turns.

Current travel advice

  • Please check your government’s official website for the latest travel advice for Ukraine before travelling.
  • Security conditions can change rapidly. Current Ukrainian and local official instructions take priority over any itinerary or historic visitor information.

Future-planning routes

  • The ready-made routes in this country file are retained for future planning and geographic context; they are not recommendations to undertake leisure travel while official wartime warnings remain in force.
  • Occupied, frontline and severely war-affected destinations are not used as route stops in current future-planning itineraries.

Rail and intercity travel

  • Ukrainian Railways remains the official source for current rail information. Services, routes and booking arrangements can change during wartime.
  • Do not assume a historic road or rail connection is operating; confirm every intercity movement shortly before any permitted journey.

War-affected heritage

  • Some cultural sites have been damaged, altered or made inaccessible during Russia’s invasion. Heritage significance and current visitability are treated as separate questions.
  • UNESCO and Ukrainian authorities should be checked for current information on damaged or protected cultural property.

Crimea and occupied territory

  • Crimea is represented within Ukraine’s internationally recognised territory. Places there are included for cultural and historical reference, not as current travel recommendations.
  • Do not infer access from the presence of coordinates or descriptive information; occupation and security conditions take priority.

Best time to visit

No conventional leisure-travel season is recommended while official wartime travel warnings remain in force.

Security conditions take priority over seasonality. Please check your government’s official website for the latest travel advice for Ukraine before travelling, and consult current Ukrainian official guidance.
