Best time to visit

April to June and September to October usually provide the best balance for historic towns, caves, coast, wine areas and lower walking routes. July and August suit alpine and coastal trips but bring crowds, heat and storms. High mountains have a separate snow and safety season, while winter travel depends on road, lift and avalanche conditions.

Mountain weather can change rapidly. Caves, gorges, lifts, boats, seasonal museums, salt pans and protected areas use changing schedules. Bora wind, thunderstorms, wildfire restrictions, floods, snow and road closures can alter plans at short notice.
