Travelling in Czechia

How the days actually work here — seasons, transport, pace and what to do when the weather turns.

Getting around Czechia

  • Trains are practical between Prague, Brno, Plzeň, Olomouc, Ostrava and many regional towns.
  • A car becomes more useful for multi-castle days, national-park trailheads and some South Moravian or Bohemian Paradise routes.
  • Do not build a rural day around a connection until the current local bus or train timetable has been checked.

City planning

  • Prague is best explored in walkable clusters with tram or metro links between districts.
  • Brno, Olomouc, Plzeň and Ostrava work well with a central base and public transport.
  • Historic centres often use cobbles and traffic restrictions, so central parking is not always the easiest arrival choice.

Mountains, rocks and caves

  • Use marked park trails and obey seasonal nature-protection closures.
  • Mountain weather can change quickly; keep a lower-level alternative for Sněžka and Krkonoše days.
  • Caves use fixed guided entry and remain cool even in summer; reserve Punkva Caves early in busy periods.

Seasonal checks

  • Many castle interiors, gardens and outdoor visitor services reduce schedules outside the main season.
  • Snow and ice can persist in the mountains after lowland spring begins.
  • Sandstone areas can close temporarily because of fire risk, storms, erosion or conservation work.

Building comfortable days

  • Treat major castle complexes as half-day experiences instead of stacking several long interiors.
  • Pair one demanding hike with a lighter town or viewpoint, not another strenuous route.
  • Use spa towns, city museums and indoor heritage as useful bad-weather alternatives.

Accessibility

  • Historic castles and rock landscapes often contain stairs, cobbles or steep gradients even when the visitor centre is accessible.
  • Check the exact accessible entrance and lift status directly for any attraction where step-free access is essential.
  • Shorter town-centre, garden or viewpoint-only visits can be better than attempting every interior or trail.

Best time to visit

April to October for broad touring; May, June and September often give the best balance for cities, castles and outdoor regions.

July and August are busiest in Prague and major heritage sites. Mountain trails, caves, castles, gardens and seasonal transport should always be checked for the exact travel date.
